Samsung DLP has been fixed!

Tuesday, May 13 2008, by smakus

Not that anybody cares, but I thought I'd update everybody anyway, since I did mention the DLP TV drama here before, and maybe it will help somebody down the line.

My new ballast and bulb came in for my Samsung HLN-507W DLP TV.  Putting the ballast in was a pain in the ass because you have to remove nearly every screw near the bottom-back of the TV, so you can slide out the entire assembly to have room for installing the ballast.

It turns out the ballast wasn't necessarily the problem, as just replacing the ballast didn't do a damn thing.  I put in the new bulb, and viola!  I had my TV back.  I decided to keep the new ballast anyway, since the old one could have been contributing to the shortened life span of the bulb I just replaced.

What's funny is the picture is so much brighter (and even sharper??) than it was previously, and that should apply whether I'm running a Blu-Ray disc or a Poker dk game if I use it as an external display for a laptop.  I guess over the years I hadn't noticed just how much the picture had faded.  I always thought these bulbs put out a constant lumen rating, and then just blew up.  I guess not, as the new one is significantly brighter and makes a world of difference.  The TV is brand new again. Lovely, but we'll see how long it lasts.

If you ever have any questions regarding Samsung DLP TVs and their maintenance, post a comment here and I will reply to you.  I pretty much know everything there is to know now, after dealing with all this nonsense.

Thanks...

I have an HLN5065W Samsung DLP TV bought back in 2004. Never had a problem until now. There is a high pitched squeal that begins when the color wheel begins turning. I assume this is a problem with bearings and it is time to replace the color wheel assembly? Is this a tough fix and is the price for the assembly out of sight???

smakus said on 10.29.2008 at 9:51 AM

Yep, that sounds like your colorwheel needs replacement. I've completely taken apart my Samsung (had to to replace the power supply for my bulb ballast), and while not being rocket science, it still is a pretty big job. I imagine if you take your time with it, it would take you about an hour to get to the color wheel (i think you have to remove and slide out the back panel to really be able to get to the housing for it). If you can afford to be without a TV for a day or two, maybe follow a tutorial on how to disassemble the tv to get to the color wheel, and if you run into anything that makes you nervous, just stop and call a tech out.

This tutorial goes step-by-step. It is very good and will walk you through it:

I have the HLN507W1X DLP and my ballast is also bad, but I have been working with incompetent, so called TV repair person and he doesn't know anything!!! My TV has been in a non-working state for months and he keeps telling me it is something else...we put in a new lamp and it still didn't work...we replaced the color wheel and it still didn't work...he told us we needed a new ballast so we said to order it! When it came in he came over to put it in and after HOURS of him screwing with the TV he came out and said it didn't fit my model!!!! I have waited months for him to tell me that they now cannot find a ballast to fit my TV and that there isn't one that exists!!!! WTF!!!! This TV is only 4 years old as we bought it in 2004. Can you please tell me the model number of the ballast you purchased that fits your tv because I think we have the same model. I am taking matters into my own hands at this point and I am ready to call the BBB on him. This will be my last ditch effort to fix the TV and I hope it works becasue there are no more parts left to replace!!!

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

smakus said on 11.12.2008 at 9:15 AM

Hi Kim, I feel your pain. These TVs are such a pain in the ass. Anyway I believe I ordered all of my parts from partstore.com. They have a specific section for your DLP located here:

www.partstore.com/.../HLN507W1X.aspx

My ballast was the BP47-00008A. I would order probably both the new bulb and ballast (check their return policy, but I think you can return anything without a restock fee, just shipping). If those two parts don't fix it, chances are something else more expensive is messed up and you are better off with a new one (DLPs are $1500, a new ballast and bulb is around $250, so its a slippery slope).

At any rate, good luck with everything I know these TVs are a pain! Here is a tutorial if you want to fix it yourself:

www.consumermeet.com/.../samsung-dlp-bal

You can totally handle it if you just take your time with it, and don't rush anything.

I have an Samsung HL-R5067W which is starting to flicker and go to blue screen anytime there is a lot of white in the background of the picture. I checked in the Service Menu yesterday and it has 9024 hours on the bulb. Do you think the flickering could be the ballast? Were these some of the symptoms that you experienced?

Samsung DLP 52″ is doing the same thing that joe’s and ray’s was doing. Picture freezes and then goes black. Does not allow you to turn tv off or switch to another source while it is turned black or frozen. I unplug it for a while and then it works fine for a while. ( A day or two at the most). Have a pc hooked up to it and it works fine on the pc component, even while it is freezing up on component 2 or hdmi (have dish network box on comp. 2 and ps3 on hdmi comp.) I find that very odd. Please someone help me figure out what’s going on.

I just replaced the color wheel on my HLN5065W and a few minutes after I turned the unit on, it started making that whining/grinding sound again. any ideas?

mike said on 3.19.2009 at 9:25 PM

whinning noise = color wheel

smakus said on 3.23.2009 at 3:18 PM

@mr. deville:
That's a LOT of hours for a standard bulb, but i don't think the bulb or ballast is your problem. It's most likely the color wheel spinning too slowly, however I've never seen this in person, so I can't be 100% there. I'd try replacing the color wheel though.

@bruster:
The three blinking lights is a common problem with these sets. You can view this thread to see what others have tried:
www.avsforum.com/.../t-190738.html
and
www.tomshardware.com/.../22575-4-samsung It is probably more trouble than it's worth however... as replacing the entire assembly is a substantial chunk of money compared to just getting a new TV - but there are some cheaper fixed you can try listed in that thread.

@mike:
Your guess is as good as mine at that point. Power to the ballast does run from somewhere else inside the unit, however I've never traced it to its source.

@dennis, @brandon:
You might need a new colorwheel. If you've already tried that, make sure the wheel is still spinning when you turn the unit on. If it's not, try replacing the wheel again.

@jacob and @joe:
Probably some internal component is overheating. Probably the DMD board. Check out this thread as a reference: forum.ecoustics.com/.../14343.html

@steven:
The whining noise is definitely the colorwheel. Make sure you don't have something rubbing against it, or its not set in there too crooked, etc.

My Samsung HLN507W does not turn on the green lamp light will flash, then the set turns itself off.

Hi smackus!

I have a 52" Samsung DLP, about 3 years old. About a month ago the picture would go almost entirely green. Someone told me to try unplugging it for a minute, so I tried that and it worked. Now however, the picture will occasionally flicker. Nothing major, but annoying enough that I'd like to try and fix it. If I unplug it it will go away for a few hours but then come back. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?

Thanks!

smakus said on 3.30.2009 at 10:34 AM

@tony:
At a minimum you probably need a new bulb. You might need a ballast as well, but try a new bulb first. The bulb is easy to replace, and there are many tutorials online.

@jason:
it sounds like you need a new colorwheel

We have a Samsung DLP HLN5065 TV. So far we changed the lamp. Can't get it to work. Thinking it might be ballast. took out old ballast, blew dust off and put back in. But no luck. Guess we need to buy a ballast and replace. Does any one understand the light sequence? Help! Emily & Rob

Dalton in Orlando said on 4.21.2009 at 9:30 PM

the power for the ballast runs from the power board located on the "power button" side of the unit.. it is the board up front. IF the bulb comes on at some point the ballast is doing its job. there are several small dongles of wires going from the dmd into the power board that actually control the power and what power gets to what board. I am having similar problems with a Samsung HLN4365w, mine has a new bulb. however when the unit is turned on it will power up as it should. a Flawless picture comes on screen as it always did BUT in only lasts 10-20 seconds and p00f the power being sent to the ballast/bulb is killed. im assuming that the dmd or digital board is sending a signal to the ower board to shut down power being sent to the ballast/lamp. My project is a gimme.. a tv that i really have all the time in the world to tinker with. I will continue to diagnose this issue and keep everyone updated with my progress. Im an electrician by trade so this is a lil out of my field of expertise, but i am indeed confident enough with small electronics that i will find the issue with time. or at least a "workaround" to it.. even if that means somehow supplying non monitored power to the ballast/bulb with the required voltage.

to be continued:::

Hello. I have a 43 inch Samsung DLP bought in 2004 or so. It was a great TV until it started to behave rather oddly. I turn it on and after a few minutes the picture turns black and white and pixilated. At first I thought it was the bulb, so I replaced it. I also replaced the colour wheel since it was making a lot of noise. At first the TV seemed to be fixed after replacing those parts, but then it started up again, only this time it got progressively worse. Now, when I unplug the TV for a while then plug it back in it works for a while, 15 to 20 minutes, but then I lose the picture. Unplugging and replugging the TV seems to be the only way I can get a picture, for at least a few minutes anyway. Does anyone have an idea what is going on? Research seems to be pointing toward either the ballast, or the DMD board. Anyone?

Hey i have a Samsung dlp hln567wx/xxa and when i turn it on the picture is fine for a few minutes then flickers for a bit and shuts off. It would run for about and hour or 2 and then shut off but now it is more frequent. Also you have to unplug it to be able to power it back up, but then it starts all over again. I did take it apart and clean all the fans and components with air and a small pc vac.

Any ideas here? Do these sets have logic boards or is that the DMD BOARD?

I recently replaced the color wheel in my 61" samsung DLP and immediately afterward the black levels and contrast were completely messed up. I've spent hours messing with the tv settings in setup and can't get it right. The video issue is usually only in dark colors and black. Kind of a ghosting. Any ideas?

The TV is a Samsung 5063W manufactured 08/2004. Recently, the color wheel was replaced and, while waiting for a replacement DMD board with a jumper, the picture died an abrupt death during a violent movie. Leaping to the conclusion the bulb was dead, I took it to a TV repair shop and had 2 techs confirm it had expired after 3800 hours. They offered to sell me a new bulb for $160. I declined and ordered a new one for $127 including shipping. Alas! the replacement bulb failed to light. Using a volt meter on a DC setting, I inserted the red and black probes into the 2 prong plugs of the ballast board, turned on the TV and got no reading. None. No juice, moose! What further tests can I make to assure the ballast is dead or alive?

mike said on 6.22.2009 at 3:16 PM

I have a samsung HL-T5075S. About a week ago the picture went out and the 3 lights on the front of the set started to blink. I called samsung and they told me i needed a new lamp. I ordered a new lamp, installed it and still have nothing. Do you think this could be the ballast? I had a service technician come out and he told me the the color wheel and the fan looked good.

I have a DLP Samsung and the T.V comes on fine but after a few minutes to an hour the screen will go blank but the audio is still on. I turn the T.V off and then turn it back on and the picture is back. This happens several times each time I watch it. I am hoping it is just needs a new bulb.

Samantha said on 7.09.2009 at 6:34 PM

I have a 61 inch Samsung HLP6163W. I noticed the lamp does not turn on. I replaced the lamp but no luck. The tv turns itself on, I hear the fan and then I hear a vibrating noise ontop of that which is not coming from the fan. The noise isn't a whining noise (I know what that sounds like since this tv was repaired for that reason under warranty), just sounds like if the wheel is out of balance from its spindle or something. If the colorwheel is the problem, I am not sure why my new lamp won't turn on though. The tv would turn on for about 15-20 seconds, I guess the computer chip notices a fault and resets the power, waits a few seconds then turns on again. This cycle repeats for about a minute then the tv gives up and stops turning on and blinks the lamp and stnby lights. TV is out of warranty so this is a DIY job but I need to pinpoint the problem. Already wasted about 100 bux on a new lamp which I probably didnt need for another year and a half. Help!

lisa k said on 7.12.2009 at 2:05 PM

The Samsung DLP HL-T6156W has the three blinking lights which looks to be a bulb replacement. We replaced the bulb and nothing changed. There is no main power getting from power supply board to the lamp ballast board of the tv components. Do you think we need to replace the computer board? There is a bit of power that makes the fans go but that's it.

Thnaks!

I have a Samsung HL-R5678W that is approx 3 years old. a few months a go the about an inch of the full left side started to darken to to bottom. David Ackerman said on 8.12.2009 at 7:02 PM

Hey, thanks for the great blog post. I can give some advice here as well, as my TV has had some of the same issues. I have a 50" model, it's the HLR50WLR something. Doesn't really matter as all the DLP models have similar problems.

Turned on my TV to an extremely loud whining noise. Figured it was the color wheel, so I ordered and had it replaced. While taking it apart I also realized that the lamp had blown (glass was everywhere inside), so I ordered one of those as well.

Installed both the color wheel and lamp, but the lamp does not fire. I get the LAMP (green) light on the front, and then it eventually does the 3 lights of death.

Is this the ballast? I hope so, because I just ordered one. If this doesn't work then I'm sending these parts back and buying a new TV, because the next step is to buy a whole new light engine which is close to $1000.

The reason I think it's the ballast is because I hear a "click click click" noise which is indicative of the the lamp trying to fire, but not receiving enough power from the ballast. Or maybe it's the power supply itself, who knows!?!

I have a Samsung HLR5067WAX/XAA. Something made a loud pop, lost video but sound remained. Lamp had blown internally, no glass fragments though. Replaced lamp, but now the lamp will light as soon as you plug in the power cord...it will light if access door switch is active or not...switch makes no difference. I even unplugged the switch from the circuit board to see what would happen. After plugging in the power cord the lamp comes on and the "lamp" light on the front of the TV comes on for 30 seconds or more then goes off...pushing the power button on the remote at this time makes the "Timer" light come on but only while holding the button down...after a minute or two the lamp goes out as well...I never get a picture or sound on the tv...if I push the power button on the front of the TV during this sequence of events the "Standby/Temp light comes on. Something is able to turn the lamp off after a short time, but what can cause the lamp to come on by just plugging in the power cord. I hope I've given enough information to get a response. Thanks...

Best Buy/Geek Squad is a joke!! My Samsung DLP model HLR4667WX/XAA was just completly replaced end of May. Extended warranty thru Best Buy expired in July. TV has been flashing blue screen for couple weeks, finally had time to call about it. Geek squad refuses to guarantee work service or parts beyond 30 days or end of extended warranty. They can send service repair out for $150 COD for diagnostic, plus cost of repair...Basically they are saying the unit they replaced was only guaranteed 30 days, all because 4 year warranty has expired! I AM PISSED AND TOLD THEM I WILL NOT ONLY TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THIS BS, I will also be reporting it to Consumer Complaints agencys as well as my local news to call out the fraud Best Buy is selling. ANYWAYS, last time it was the color wheel, and when the tech came to see, he just ordered the whole entire unit, which he said was basically the whole insides of the tv, minus the shell. Basically what it is doing now, is after a little while, and intermittenyl, the screen will start flickering, or rolling , then go blue and then a message saying No Signal, which YES there is signal. the other thing is I think it IS the lamp. cause on the front of the TV is the power button, and it used to light up LAMP in green when you turned it on, and it dont do that anymore. HELP? PLEASE!!!!!

WTF are all these questions posted for with NOOOOO answers? People - EVERYONE is having the same problems. I worked for a manufacturer (Toshiba) These things are designed to fail under the false premise that they used cheape parts only in the interest of making the product more profitable. Stop wasting your time. What ever money you try to save you will eventually spend in service parts or whatever. Even the prices are designed to make it not worthy. Just buy a new TV or all pull together a file a class action suit. No one has time or money for this. They know it. Why do you think you cant even get good help from the source (Samsung) Ive taken mine apart fully. I even found noise coils purposly routed on top of signal components. And you wonder why SVIDEO or Analog might have diagnal lines. They dont even ship these fully calibrated. Im lucky I got 20000 hours of my bulb and 7 years off my HLN5065W.

Read this about faulty saftey power/temp switch,

www.fixya.com/.../t395392-samsung I taped mine closed, danger for other owners, I just unplug, always

and on my 3yr old 56" dlp, take out bulbs board/box, two connectors to find and unplug and 1st vacume fan/fans and then blow hard with air compressor to clear dust off circuits you can't reach and top near ballast, and through light bulb vent path Don't foget the other fan and dust on motherboard.

Free and takes a HOUR or so, I relaced light unnessarly.

Hi everybody, sorry to have been absent! Wow, a lot of these DLP issues are out of my domain... But I can try to help:

If you hear a clicking noise, but no picture comes up, either your Lamp is dead, or your ballast is dead. Try replacing both if you've only replaced one (or none) recently.

If the colors are all messed up, it's either your color wheel, or one of the DLP logic/input boards. Color wheel is a cheap replacement, and anything else is probably not worth it.

These days you can really only find 3 parts: The lamp, the ballast, and the color wheel. Many of the problems here don't sound like they are related to those 3 parts.

You can TRY using this guide:

www.fixyourdlp.com/.../wizard-page-01.

Sorry I can't be more help, these TVs have so many problems that they are failing beyond my personal expertise, and beyond the parts that area available for these TVs.

I highly recommend moving to LED LCD or other technologies from here out...

Then sometimes it comes on as normal but only for a few seconds and turns itself off and on over and over. A service call was conducted by the authorized Samsung representative and it was found that the Main Printed Circuit Board Assembly P/N BN94-02084A about $500 is bad. It appears this assembly is no longer available.Do you know if there is any other way to get this fixed without having to shell out $500? Thank you very much.

my samsung 61 dlp (hln617wx) will turn on, but soon the image goes black and the audio continues. sometimes you can turn it off and on and it returns.. to go out again. Sometimes you must unplug it to turn it off. I've seen similar posts, but no suggestions? anyone have a clue? I'm happy to "do it myself" if there is a fix. thanks in advance. bruce

I have a Samsung HLN5065WX/XAA

Symptoms: Picture blacks out but I have audio. Lamp is on in the back and I can't bring up the menu in any source (DVD/Cable/etc...). I have to turn off the TV and wait for the lamp to shutoff and then turn on the TV to get the picture back. This happens intermittently but frequently and sometimes it stays on for a while before it blacks out.

Any ideas??

Last 5 issues all sound like logic board stuff. You can't buy these parts anymore. :(

For $500, you might as well spend a bit more and get a brand new TV that will both look better and last longer. Sorry everybody.

I can turn it off for awhile and then the set will act normal again but the problem reoccurs again after about two-three hours of viewing. Any suggestions and is this something I can repair myself?

I have a Samsung DLP 42666WX TV and have replaced the bulb about a year ago. Now I'm getting the TV just turning off without warning and now it wont come on at all. The three indicators say lamp, stanby, and timer. What is the problem here as I have no buzzing sound and the last time the lamp went out it just slowly made the picture darker but did not just turn off.

Virginia said on 1.14.2010 at 7:59 PM

I have a Samsung DLP HLR5067wax/xaa. It turns off by its self and when I press the power button it does not respond. After repeatedly pressing the button or unplugging and replugging the tv it will finally turn. It will remain and show a great picture from anywhere from 10 minutes or up to 24 hours before shutting itself off again.

So, I had the light replaced a few days ago and when the repair guy left the tv was working and then it turned off and began its usual cycle of turning off.

It does not make any high pitch noises or buzzing sounds. at times there are green lines through the picture which usually resolves quickly.

what do you think would cause the tv to shut off and not turn back on? does that sound like a ballast? and is the ballast the same as a control panel? Or does that sound like a colorwheel?

I look forward to hearing your feedback

When the picture gets brighter the dots get smaller and dimmer, when the picture gets dark it is the opposite. Doesa nyone know if there is something that might need to be cleaned, or any info on this matter would help

I also have this POS with the same problems like everyone else. Replaced the lamp twice in less than two years, so almost $360 on top of the $1600 I paid for the TV. This by far, is the worse company to deal with, apparently the lamp is the fix-all answer to all their customers. I will never, ever buy anything that has samsung written on it and will do everything possible to prevent others from buying this brand. This should be a recall on a known defect that they kept producing and selling. I have notified the BBB in my state. Please, do not spend any more money, it will not fix the TV.

I have a Samsung 61" HLN617W DLP. Have had it for about 6 years now with absolutely no problems except having to change one bulb. The other day, I noticed TEMP light on front panel of TV was 100% "red" color. I looked in manual and web sites but could not get any information to identify the cause of this. I assumed it was due to the fact the my kids left the TV on for a straight 24 hours. I turned off the unit for 24 hours and when turning it back on the red light on panel still remained. I then unplugged the TV to reboot and when I turned on set again the Red Light was gone. My wife continued to watch TV the next day for several hours then she heard a "POP" noise and the entire TV went black. I turned off the TV and when turning the TV back on I heard a very loud humming noise that would oscilate in low ..high..low pitch noises.

Any ideas what I should change out... Color Wheel ?? Fans ??

I have a Toshiba DLP, and in the middle of watching a DVD, it started resetting itself. I Heard a click when it did this, and The LAMP LED light flashed 15 times and the tv attempted to restart itself a few times before picture and video returned again.

I replaced the lamp with an original toshiba lamp specific for my model, and the tv was on for 45 minutes until identical symptoms returned. The TV comes on with a beautiful, bright HD picture (brighter than the lamp I replaced) but this intermittent restarting game with the LAMP LED light flashing returns.

I've sucked out all the vents with a high powered Dyson vacuum, and that didnt seem to help with this problem either. ANy ideas?

I have a Samsung HLN617W1X/XAA. I was turning off the TV by hitting the ON/OFF button on the bottom right of the TV, and felt a very large shock. The TV turned off at that same instant. I couldn't tell if it was because of my hitting the button, or something shorted out. None the less, the TV will not turn back on. Any suggestions on what happened, and ultimately, how to fix it? I'm not the most technical person, but I have replaced the bulb for this TV twice without any incident. Thanks in advance!

I have a Samsung DLP5063WX/XAA, it intermittently has 30 while vertical lines. It usually happens at power up, but has happened once during normal viewing. In either case, a power down and then power up fixes the problem.

Yesterday, the screen went black but I could still hear audio. Again a power cycle fixed the problem.

Obviously something is dying. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Chester said on 7.22.2010 at 2:05 AM

Hi!

I have the same exact model you have. I got it thru a friend when he had some problems with it. it would turn on for 15 mins or so and then the screen would turn black and display random white images... most times the audio would continue.

i found out that, like a PC, the older the TV gets. the electronics somehow got more hotter. maybe working harder? dust buildup do tend block air flow... to help it out. I opened the rear up. vacuumed the internals best as i could. i even use a dust air canister to blow some out that the vacuum couldnt reach, but be careful with the blowing, you dont want it to go in the the light box assembly.

while i was doing this. i had an idea of pointing a fan at the back while i try to play a few games off my xbox. it ran for a couple of hours and never turned black and white. that tells me that there is a part in there that does overheat. I was able to narrow it down to the DMD control board. (after googling the part). it was in a .. tin? cage with perforation? holes? without any fans. so i figure it couldnt let heat out fast enough. i took it out. took off one side of the cover. and then, since it was facing the rear cover panel that had vent holes, i placed some 12v 80mm PC fans that actually pointed at it directly. it worked! for good measure. i opened the panel where you can access your bulb. and put a 120mm fan there also that sucked the air from inside to outside. the fans are powered from a used 12v adapter for a modem i had lying around.

i only use the tv to play movies and games so its not being used all the time. but when its hot (maybe 85F inside the house) it does the black and white screen again. but for the most part during cold weather. i have no problems.

i also added a thermal sensor (the kind from home depot for $12?) the one that detects the attic temp? its adjustable. and i placed it at the bulb vent. so when it hits a certain temp. it turns on the fan that i installed.

its been 3 years now since i done it. still using the same bulb.

hope this helps out a few people who had similar issues.

Good Luck!

Chester

I bought a samsung DLP 56 inch in 2008. Had problems early one that included white spots which increased to MANY white spots. Luckily I purchased the extended warranty. This was just the beginning of my samdung nightmare. The TV repairman was coming weekly and he had the tv more than I did. I'm not sure if he even changed the right parts. After the lights all flashed, I called the horrible Samdung idiots and they convinced me to buy a bulb. After dishing out nearly $150 and changing it myself, it still didn't work. The Samdungs told me to purchase a colorwheel...what do they think customers are? Stupid? Repair people. Took it to a repairman and he had the tv for two months because parts are obsolete AND expensive. Obviously SAMDUNGS are ripping off their customers. A $1900 tv should last for more than 2 years. Now there are white mushrooms all over the screen and who the hell knows what they'll try to sell me to get rid of those. Somebody needs to put them out of business or correct their greedy corrupt practices.

Bob M said on 12.02.2010 at 7:56 PM

I have a 42" Samsung HL-S DLP TV and am having two screen problems. I got it back in early 2007. I don't have much $ and want to only do what I have to in order to make the TV good again. I've spoke to a repair tech online about it and he gave me some thoughts...I just want a second opinion from someone who maybe had the same problem.

First, there are some blotchy black lines on the left side of my set. They are separated almost perfectly by like 2" from top to bottom and there is also some black blotchy spots on the bottom left getting less noticeable closer towards the center of the screen. Some of the lines have a few dots far separated continuing along the same lines that make it near the center of the screen. The black lines may be slightly worse after I turn the TV on. A tech told me that he thinks that a soldered connection on the main board (DMD board I believe it is called) has failed taking out those particular lines of picture and that it may be possible to remove the main board and re-solder it. Otherwise the main board will cost me almost a new TV in $ to replace. Has anyone else had this problem and what was your solution? Has anyone extracted the main board and how did you do it(little info on doing this is posted online and the pictures I've seen show little room to work around the board)?

Second, my screen still seems plenty bright and the colors seem fine...but there is a flickering/discoloration around different colors of the screen that change depending on the picture. Different shades of green grass, face hues are excellent examples that bring the issue. The tech thinks it is the lamp and says that just replacing the lamp in most cases reveals a huge difference in brightness and picture quality. I still think my screen is pretty bright. The lamp is original to the set and shows no other problems as others have had. Any ideas here?

I would greatly appreciate any input from anyone who has had the same issues with their sets and what the causes and remedies were. Thank you.

bob m said on 12.29.2010 at 6:30 PM

I don't know if anyone follows or administers this board anymore, but I was able to fix my TV after searching online, calling around for advice and gaining access to the service menu. The black lines and dots are gone and the color blotchyness is gone too. Here are my copied and pasted blogs from elsewhere. I hope that this helps someone with the same issues.

"I got more info based of your info and got access to the Service Menu of my TV. For anyone else that needs to get in there, have the TV OFF and press mute 182 power quickly (2 seconds or so). Your screen should show up with the same input source displayed, but with a special new menu of the left. To test the main board's quality, scroll down to DDP3021(K220), hit the right arrow to get to the next menu, then the up arrow to move over to where it says TEST PATTERN DDP 0. Push right arrow to begin tests. The first screen color should appear red. Continue hitting right to change colors. On my TV, the black lines and lots on the bottom exist on every color, so there is something wrong with the DMD digital video display board (NOT THE MAIN BOARD). If someone else out there wanted to test their issues this way, if there is no change between the colors and whatever issue you have (so long as it is still there in all colors), whether it be black dots or lines, white dots or lines, you have something wrong with the DVD digital display board or the light engine assembly including the color wheel. For now I have ordered an entire new board and light engine assembly. Not cheap at $320, but still a little less than a new TV. I could have just got the board for $100, but you must disassemble the entire light engine. This way it is easier to remove and install and I get a new color wheel with it. The TV is almost 4 years old, so parts are starting to wear and it is possible that a soldered connection or multiple have come loose under the DLP chip on the DMD board due to heat. The blotchyness I am seeing on pictures is probably also from the DMD. My the way, the DLP chip looks like a regular 1" or so microchip on a motherboard...but it has tons of micro mirrors under it to create the image. It is not some huge contraption that I was imagining. I will post again next week with the outcome so that someone else doesn't have to go through 4 months of research into the same subject!"

"I got it fixed! It took about 2 hours to do. Taking it apart carefully took the longest. After I reverse engineered it, it was easy to put it back together. I'm pretty sure the new DMD board was the opposing model # as the hear dispersing fins were smaller and the numbers were off a few...but it didn't matter as I bought the whole light engine (DMD board with color wheel already and new projector lens already installed). No, the lamp didn't come with it. Mine has over 9,000 hours on it (can see the hours only in the service menu), but it is still plenty bright. I knew the lamp was never the problem. I guess the heat can make the solderings around the DLP chip to come loose over time and cause black or white spots or lines. That was probably the issue with mine, but I feel there was something with the color wheel too that caused the blotchyness. All problems are gone now...black lines, black dots and color blotchyness. Getting the whole light engine was the way to go. I hope all this info helps people as the issues I had were rather unique to online forums."

Second Turn on the picture was nonexistance with a fabric pattern across the entire screen. Third turn on has the picture being totally green, I mean you can make out the people and buildings and words but everything is bathed in Green. If you take the time to learn to how to replace your dlp lamp then you can save yourself a lot of money by fixing your old TV and not buying a new one. I highly recommend this to anyone who thinks their samsung tv may have died.

So, I replaced my color wheel, it was a snap and ran less than $100 and ~1 hour of work...

So, this morning, I noticed a fuzzily outlined box in the corner of the picture.

I took apart everything (again) and everything is fine and correct, EXCEPT, there is a...not sure how to describe it...a glass/mirror box tube thing right behind the color wheel. It looked like one of the mirrors fell down (I guess they were glued together) and was clipping the edge of the light.

Like I said, I have no idea what this thing is called, what part number it would be, where I could find a part, etc.

It is about 3 inches long or so and maybe 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch rectangle...and is covered by a flexible metal cover with about 7 very small black screws.

I tried to glue the mirror back in place, but now it looks like it isn't lined up right. Now two edges of the picture are "clipped" with a faded picture where the mirror/glass walls of the tub/box thing are being hit with the light.

Anyone have any idea where I can get another one or if it is even needed?

windquake said on 3.27.2011 at 6:03 PM

Okay...so I found out, it is called a "Light Tunnel" and it costs about $56 to replace.

So, new question: Since I have these dark bands on the screen and it will be a couple weeks til I can order one, what would happen if I just removed the one in there now?

ShawnR said on 6.24.2011 at 2:59 AM

Some help to others:

Whining, screeching noises- your color wheel is shot.

No light-your light bulb and/or ballast is shot.

White dots on your screen-your DLP chip is shot.

Colors are screwed up/ gradations of color are screwed up-your DMD board is shot.

Another issue- when one thing goes, it can make the others go- ie-the lamp blows, which makes the color wheel shatter, which loosens the connections on the DLP chip, and ruins the DMD board!

We changed the light bulb twice.

Thank you so much for offering your help. My question is number 1: if i lost the screws that i took out to get to the ballast, can I buy new ones anywhere?

2: I can't get to the ballast. It seems like I have taken out every screw in and around the assembly. Maybe I am not pulling it from the right spot?

I have a samsung DLP 61" that has a big Red X and two white dots underneath the x on black screen. What do you think the problem is? Should I buy another TV. I have had the color wheel replaced once.

smakus said on 7.14.2011 at 7:07 PM

It's new TV time cathy... sorry.

bbcupcake, your ballast is likely shot, so it cant power your lamp.

andrew, you can use some common screws to re-assemble the tv. The ballast is literally what is plugged in to your bulb. Find the bulb, and you'll find the ballast. it looks like a circuit board.

ranita, there is a sheath that keeps light from leaking around the colorwheel. this is likely peeling/going bad. You can open the tv and see if you can tape up the area to cover any holes that might contribute to light leak

Model #: HL-R5668W

Model Code: HLR5668Wx/XAA

Replaced the lamp and color wheel so far:

1) Samsung BP96-01073A Replacement Lamp

2) COLOR WHEEL / FOR CHASSIS (L6) BP96-01103A

The tv turns on completely for about 1 minute. The color on the tv is pretty far off (dark and faded w/ red tint). When I pop up the menu on the tv it appears faded as well. Then after about a minute the tv shuts off whith all three lights blinking (timer, standby, lamp).

My best guess is:

1. Ballast since the piture is faded maybe not enough power?

2. DMD board since menu appears faded.

I've read Danny's post above that showed the service code (mute + 182 + power on button). I will see if the tv stays on long enough for this to trigger. However I cannot find the remote :/ .Please shoot me an email if you have any ideas n_bielik2001@yahoo.com or call (817) 800-1901

I was watching tv and suddenly there was a loud popping noise like a bulb exploding and then the smell of burning. Sound was still working and still does when I turn it on but no picture obviously - is it quite simple to replace parts to a Samsung DLP? Or is is just better to get a new one =- its 7 years old and never had any problems before

We have had our samsung DLP for 4 years and never had a problem with the lamp going out until last month. 3 lights were going on and off and so we got a new lamp. 2 months later it did it again!!! How can that be with a new lamp? Could there be something else???

krimi said on 8.12.2011 at 5:43 PM

It could be the temp sensor going bad. This sensor sits on top of the metal housing which the bulb assembly slides into. The bulb assembly will have a hole on top and this is where the sensor is above. There is a small blue and white wire that plugs into it. If you pull the wire out and put a paper clip or wire in the coupling you will basically bypass the sensor connecting the blue and white wire. If your tv turns on then that is your problem. Its cheap too. Here were my symptoms..1] Turn tv on 2] Bulb would light up..(which eliminates the ballast) regular picture would show up (which eliminates the bulb and color wheel) 3] 30 seconds later tv would shut down with 3 flashing lights. After bypass the tv turned on as always and hasnt shut down yet. Always un plug tv first. Get the replacement part to avoid overheating and possible fire

I get no change from any setting TV, VCR, USB- etc. The TV has a 12volt power hook up and has a transformer in the plug to get from 110v to the 12vdc. I have been using the TV on my boat and using straight 12v power. My batteries went drained when I left the charger off, could have the low power supply damaged something.

What should cause this can I replace the part and how do I trouble shoot?

I have a Samsung hlp4663wx & I think I've seen similar problems to mine on here. I replaced the bulb about 9 months ago & everything was fine until this morning. I had the tv on for a couple hours with no problems & then the screen went black but I still had sound. I tried to turn it off but the manual controls as well as the remote would not work. I unplugged the tv for a few minutes & plugged it back in & it came on immediately without me pushing power. It stayed on with good picture & sound for maybe a minute & then picture dissapeared again. When the picture is gone the tv is unresponsive. I took the bulb out & it looks ok, plugged it back in & it made kind of a clicking noise like it was trying to fire up & then did after the 3rd or 4th click.....& then lost picture again about 5 minutes later. I'm guessing ballast but I'm in no way an expert. Any comments or suggestions woould be awesome?!?

Samsung 60" DLP HDTV getting a growing number of white dots on screen. Four yrs old in Nov. Replaced bulb few months ago. After googling white spots, found other consumers with similar prob with Samsung wide screens . . . replace DLP chip? Should I be able to do this through a repair man or am I just screwed. Would rather get a new TV than invest too in a defective product. What do you think? thanks.

I had to replace my color wheel 2 years ago. I bought a spare bulb because I thought it was a good idea.

My HLN5065W shuts off after running for about 20 mins. It tries to start again and then shuts off and shows three blinking lights.

So I try my new bulb and it fires right up, same great picture but shuts dowm after 5 mins, then it tries to start then shuts off and shows three blinking lights again.

The bulbs are barely hot when I take them out and it I switch to the first bulb it won't give me any picture at all, just shuts off after a couple on mins, tries again then the blinking lights.

The fan does work, but doesn't seem to be running full speed all the time.

It is as if something got hot and need time to cool off for a while.

I'll try it again tomorrow.

Thanks you for your time.

A friend had a good wheel assem, but has with other prob. in his TV, so he gave me the color wheel. The problem I have now is that dark colors (only) have a purple/greenish tint to them, but lighter areas look good.

Any thoughts would be a help.

Hey. I don't even have the same brand as you but I just would like your opinion.

Hello. I found this M50WH74S 50" DLP set and I have become obsessed with trying to fix it as I cant afford buying an HD TV. I have researched everywhere and I have narrowed down a few things. Replaced the bulb already too.

Symptoms: No Picture, No Sound, No Fans. No Error Code When I either plug the TV in or try to turn it on it I will hear a click from the power supply, a red light on the main input/output mobo turns on. Then turns off making a click. There is still a green light on the power supplies board.

From what I have seen online the one thing that stands out about mine is I am not getting an error code on the power button. Most cases the light will blink 5 or 3 times. Turn off. Then blink 5 or 3 times again. Mine however does not display a error code. It will turn on for a bit. Then turn off.

I took a look at the PSU and I see maybe one capacitor that is bad. There is also some residue on a capacitor on the ballast but it doesn't look like it was really blown. If pictures would help I could send some.

From the beginning I though that the power supply is bad. And I am planning on order the power supply and input/output board.

Any help would be appreciated. If you have any other questions about this issue please let me know.

Thanks,

Curt

Please reply via email BTW. Thanks.

1 problem & 1 solution:

Current problem is if the tv gets turned off and restarted before it cools down again- It does this -humm delay Whirring sound delay beep delay delay repeat. (SOMETIMES it does the same thing even from a cold startup)

Up until now I haven't needed to attempt to fix it but it is getting more and more frequent and today it went and did it's whirring noise again. an hour later it's back on - but I'm worried it time is up. please help or do I just replace lamp, wheel, & ballast and hope for the best?

mick said on 10.08.2011 at 11:19 PM

I did find a solution to one common problem. The green effect on my screen happened (after I took it apart following several online diagnostics to no avail)

the green scrambled screen then black screen "no signal" was from a faulty hdmi cable connection. Another post led me to this stating that unlike a standard cable the hdmi talks/negotiates the signal (to determine what level hdmi to use) and even a small connection problem can lead to the green screen/static/"no signal" I I found that in my case a better cable ($35) solved the problem. However the problem came back soon enough. I then discovered that it was the connector @ the TV that was part of the problem. If I held the cable steady it connected and picture came on fine- let go- byebye picture. So now I have a $35 cable I may or may not have needed and a 10 cent zip tie holding the cable up behind the TV. I guess the heavy cable and moving around over the last couple of years bent or weakened the connector @ the TV. Hope it helps someone else.

Whenever there is a bright light in the movie/animated flick I am watching, the tv goes black for about 1 to 3 seconds, then the picture comes back.

I bought a new bulb and this did NOT do the trick.

Your advice is most welcome.

Thanks - James

When I first turn on my Samsung LED TV I get sound but the screen is different shades of horizontal greys and flickers....it does eventually clear and the picture comes on. Would this mean that I need to replace the bulb?

I have a Samsung HL-T5076S x/xAA that is 4 years old and about a month ago, I started seeing white dots on the right side of the screen. It is getting worse. What causes this and is there something that I can do to fix it or will I have to have a repair person come out? Prefer to do it myself is possible. Thanks for any info you may have.

I have a 60 inch DLP that shuts off on it's own. It may run for 15 minutes or an hour but it constantly shuts itself off. The indicator on the front of the TV says "stanby/temp". I have cleaned the TV and unplugged to reset....didn't help. I replaced the lamp/bulb deal about 2 years ago. Do you think I need a new lamp? other components? Thanks in advance for your input!

I have a Samsung 50" dlp from 2004. I had replaced bulb and color wheel 2 years ago and did fine until a loud pop and bulb blew today. I replaced the bulb and tv works, but there is sever intermittent flicker. Did the color wheel go bad when the bulb blew( only element blown and glass intact)? Could it be a bad bulb? Any other ideas?

Thanks

I have a Samsung DLP (not sure what model, but purchased in 2004'ish). For many months now, the tv will flicker audio and picture (freezing quickly and unfreezing a second later) and doing it over and over and over within minutes. It seems to happen when I've had the tv powered on for long periods of time (4 hours or so - no judgement). Any ideas what's wrong with it? I've never replaced anything on the tv in all the time I've owned it.

I HAVE A SAMSUNG DLP MODEL HLN507WIX ABOUT 7 AND A HALF YEARS OLD. WHEN THE TV IS ON FOR 4 HOURS OR SO IT OCCASIONALLY FREEZES TO A BLACK AND WHITE PIC THAT LOOKS LIKE A PEN AND INK DRAWING. AFTER TURNING IT OFF AND ON AFTER 5 MINUTES THE PIC RETURNS. I ASSUME I NEED A NEW COLOR WHEEL. IS IT WORTH SPENDING THE MONEY TO REPAIR I`VE BEEN TOLD ITS ABOUT $400 FOR A PRO REPAIR. WHAT ELSE COULD GO WRONG?

I have a Samsung 56” DLP that uses a BP96-01653a bulb, the bulb only lasts about a month, there are two wattage bulbs available 120 or 132W, I believe that I may have replaced with a 120W instead of the 132W will the 132W last longer? or is it something else?

Samsung HL-R4667W DLP

The TV makes a very loud buzzing sound when starting up and the buzzing sound continues for 5 to 10 minutes usually. Sometimes the buzzing goes away if I bang on the top or side of the TV. Sometimes it comes back after watching for hours, sometimes it is fine. The picture is always good. The lamp was replaced less than two years ago. I was thinking the color wheel may be the issue, but the picture is always good, even when the very loud buzzing is occurring. I'm thinking it may just be a fan, since the picture is good. Any advice on how I might diagnos and fix this issue would be appreciated.

How hard is it to replace the color wheel? My tv made a loud popping sound and a grating sound. The only way to stop the sound is to unplug the tv. When it is plugged back in, there is a static sound and the tv sounds like it is trying to turn on, but no picture. Good it be the light bulb?

Lori said on 12.29.2011 at 8:23 PM

Ok i have replaced the color wheel, pulled the jumper pin to get a real color picture and the next day no light, replaced the lamp and then the ballast, still no light...help this thing is getting very expensive!

So i have a 56" samsung dlp. came home today and I think my little one may have pushed the wrong button for to long, don't know. I get the three blinking lights in the front and can't get the remote to turn off the tv. It has an all black sreen no sound. All of the three lights either blink together or just the lamp one by itself. Can't find my manual which sucks. I think ther is a master reset. what do you think?

I recently got my Samsung dlp tv screen fixed for white dots and it cost me about 225$, its been about 5months and the white dots came back 2 dots appeared in just 3days.

What could it be now?

After reading all of the issues with these tv's. I've decided to start a revolution against Samsung! All of the profits from these peices of junk have helped them build the best led's today. Now its time for them to pay us back. These tv's cost thousands at first and now we cannot give them away. Also, old tube tv's from the 80's are still working. Why can't these. So if you have one of these Samsung should apologize and replace with a led equal to the thousand we spent. Who's with me?

Jessi said on 1.23.2012 at 10:22 AM

I just inherited a problem child.. a Samsung 50" dlp hln5065w tv! Yeah... however... it runs for 2 hours then the colors start freaking out! first everything turns one color then it starts to flicker like x-rays.. then changes to another color hue.. flicker then another .. until after about 20 minutes the picture goes black! If we shut it off for 30 minutes, we can watch another 15 mintues before it starts again....

There is high pitched whine at start up.. but it goes away. The fan in the back where the vent holes are works.. and they replaced the lamp already. ( This is why I have it, they didn't want to invest anymore into it.)

So, here is my question. According to online forums it sounds like the colorwheel needs replacing. What do you think? The cheapest one I have found is $85 and well, a little skiddish about spending that without some direction from someone who knows.

UPDATE: I did manage to fix the TV.

It turns out that when the Light bulb exploded, it broke the color wheel as well.

I replaced the color wheel and the Light bulb to the TV. The darkness was from a defective new light bulb.

After replacing the defective bulb the TV was working fine for about a month. (House was broken into and the TV was dropped)

I have a 4 year old Samsung 42 inch tv. It started having trouble turning on about one month ago, and would make a screeching sound with the picture being extremely blurry. After shutting it on and off many times you could see the picture come back clearer slowly and then it would finally come on clear. Randomly you could turn it on and it would be absolutely fine, but each time it acted up it took longer and longer to turn on and now simply won't turn on at all. The light still lights up and it still makes the start up and shut down sounds with no picture and without me turning it on. I have to unplug it to get it to stop the noise. Any ideas? Worth fixing or buy new?
