Lost: Via Domus Review (★★★★☆)

Summary:

Let me first say that I like the TV show Lost, but sadly I have not followed it the past 2 years. This may be a good thing as far as reviewing this game. It’s fresh all over again with just enough familiarity.

Lost is an adventure game based on the hit ABC television show of the same name. The game is very linear and plays like you are part of the TV show. You explore the island in a 3rd person view looking for clues to uncover your past and move the story forward. Fans of the show will not be disappointed with the locale and characters.

Single Player:  ★★★☆☆

You play as another character from the plane crash separate from any of the normal characters from the TV show. The game starts of with the plane crash and your character has lost his memory. It is your job to regain your memory and reveal your past.

The other characters are true to their TV counterpart and really add depth to the story. You talk to people to get information and what to do next to move the story forward. You can also trade items that you find on the island with people to get other items to help you in your quest.

Certain events will trigger a flashback. These are hazy black and white cut scenes that with the use of a camera you take a picture that helps you remember part of your past.

There are also some puzzle elements that you must solve from time to time. These are a nice diversion and helps vary the game play.

Another nice feature is that when you start a new ‘episode’ there is a little ‘Previously on Lost’ clip that highlights what happened in the last episode. It really kept the TV mood and the story details fresh in your mind.

Multiplayer:  (N/A)

Sorry, no multiplayer, only a single player experience.

Graphics:  ★★★★☆

I was pleasantly surprised by the look of the game. The jungle scenes looked quite good with the trees and foliage moving and casting shadows.

The use of lighting was good as well. From the camp fires to the sunlight filtering through the jungle, it made the landscape that much more believable.

Character models were not that bad either. Some were better than others of course, but overall a good job.

Control:  ★★★☆☆

Not much need for precise control here. Walk, Run, Turn. I did find myself getting hung up on objects from time to time but not too much.

There is only one layout option, but it does the job. You can invert your X,Y axis as well.

The game plays from a 3rd person view, but you can go into a 1st person view when standing still to get a better look at your surroundings.

Sound/Soundtrack:  ★★★★☆

I think that the use of sound in this game really ups the experience. There is a lot of detail here from the ambient jungle and surf sounds to the individual sounds of the different material that your character walks on. It really does add to the atmosphere.

The sound track is great as well. Rising and falling to match the action. No techno or rock here. It borrows its orchestral style straight from the series.

Overall:  ★★★★☆

For fans of the show this is a must rent if not an outright buy. I came into this review little pessimistic assuming that most movie and TV shows don’t translate well to games. CSI or Alias anybody?

There are real moments in the game that draw you in and I found myself wanting to keep on playing to see how the show, I mean game, would play out.

Achievements:

There are 30 achievements with about half being ‘secret’ achievements. This may add to the replay value.
