Samsung DLP has been fixed!
Not that anybody cares, but I thought I'd update everybody anyway, since I did mention the DLP TV drama here before, and maybe it will help somebody down the line.
My new ballast and bulb came in for my Samsung HLN-507W DLP TV. Putting the ballast in was a pain in the ass because you have to remove nearly every screw near the bottom-back of the TV, so you can slide out the entire assembly to have room for installing the ballast.
It turns out the ballast wasn't necessarily the problem, as just replacing the ballast didn't do a damn thing. I put in the new bulb, and viola! I had my TV back. I decided to keep the new ballast anyway, since the old one could have been contributing to the shortened life span of the bulb I just replaced.
What's funny is the picture is so much brighter (and even sharper??) than it was previously. I guess over the years I hadn't noticed just how much the picture had faded. I always thought these bulbs put out a constant lumen rating, and then just blew up. I guess not, as the new one is significantly brighter and makes a world of difference. The TV is brand new again. Lovely, but we'll see how long it lasts.
If you ever have any questions regarding Samsung DLP TVs and their maintenance, post a comment here and I will reply to you. I pretty much know everything there is to know now, after dealing with all this nonsense.
Thanks...

I have an HLN5065W Samsung DLP TV bought back in 2004. Never had a problem until now. There is a high pitched squeal that begins when the color wheel begins turning. I assume this is a problem with bearings and it is time to replace the color wheel assembly? Is this a tough fix and is the price for the assembly out of sight???
smakus said on 10.29.2008 at 9:51 AM
Yep, that sounds like your colorwheel needs replacement. I've completely taken apart my Samsung (had to to replace the power supply for my bulb ballast), and while not being rocket science, it still is a pretty big job. I imagine if you take your time with it, it would take you about an hour to get to the color wheel (i think you have to remove and slide out the back panel to really be able to get to the housing for it). If you can afford to be without a TV for a day or two, maybe follow a tutorial on how to disassemble the tv to get to the color wheel, and if you run into anything that makes you nervous, just stop and call a tech out.
This tutorial goes step-by-step. It is very good and will walk you through it:

I have the HLN507W1X DLP and my ballast is also bad, but I have been working with incompetent, so called TV repair person and he doesn't know anything!!! My TV has been in a non-working state for months and he keeps telling me it is something else...we put in a new lamp and it still didn't work...we replaced the color wheel and it still didn't work...he told us we needed a new ballast so we said to order it! When it came in he came over to put it in and after HOURS of him screwing with the TV he came out and said it didn't fit my model!!!! I have waited months for him to tell me that they now cannot find a ballast to fit my TV and that there isn't one that exists!!!! WTF!!!! This TV is only 4 years old as we bought it in 2004. Can you please tell me the model number of the ballast you purchased that fits your tv because I think we have the same model. I am taking matters into my own hands at this point and I am ready to call the BBB on him. This will be my last ditch effort to fix the TV and I hope it works becasue there are no more parts left to replace!!!
Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Hi Kim, I feel your pain. These TVs are such a pain in the ass. Anyway I believe I ordered all of my parts from partstore.com. They have a specific section for your DLP located here:
www.partstore.com/.../HLN507W1X.aspx
My ballast was the BP47-00008A. I would order probably both the new bulb and ballast (check their return policy, but I think you can return anything without a restock fee, just shipping). If those two parts don't fix it, chances are something else more expensive is messed up and you are better off with a new one (DLPs are $1500, a new ballast and bulb is around $250, so its a slippery slope).
At any rate, good luck with everything I know these TVs are a pain! Here is a tutorial if you want to fix it yourself:
www.consumermeet.com/.../samsung-dlp-bal
You can totally handle it if you just take your time with it, and don't rush anything.

I have an Samsung HL-R5067W which is starting to flicker and go to blue screen anytime there is a lot of white in the background of the picture. I checked in the Service Menu yesterday and it has 9024 hours on the bulb. Do you think the flickering could be the ballast? Were these some of the symptoms that you experienced?

Samsung DLP 52″ is doing the same thing that joe’s and ray’s was doing. Picture freezes and then goes black. Does not allow you to turn tv off or switch to another source while it is turned black or frozen. I unplug it for a while and then it works fine for a while. ( A day or two at the most). Have a pc hooked up to it and it works fine on the pc component, even while it is freezing up on component 2 or hdmi (have dish network box on comp. 2 and ps3 on hdmi comp.) I find that very odd. Please someone help me figure out what’s going on.

whinning noise = color wheel
smakus said on 3.23.2009 at 3:18 PM
@mr. deville:
That's a LOT of hours for a standard bulb, but i don't think the bulb or ballast is your problem. It's most likely the color wheel spinning too slowly, however I've never seen this in person, so I can't be 100% there. I'd try replacing the color wheel though.
@bruster:
The three blinking lights is a common problem with these sets. You can view this thread to see what others have tried:
www.avsforum.com/.../t-190738.html
and
www.tomshardware.com/.../22575-4-samsung It is probably more trouble than it's worth however... as replacing the entire assembly is a substantial chunk of money compared to just getting a new TV - but there are some cheaper fixed you can try listed in that thread.
@mike:
Your guess is as good as mine at that point. Power to the ballast does run from somewhere else inside the unit, however I've never traced it to its source.
@dennis, @brandon:
You might need a new colorwheel. If you've already tried that, make sure the wheel is still spinning when you turn the unit on. If it's not, try replacing the wheel again.
@jacob and @joe:
Probably some internal component is overheating. Probably the DMD board. Check out this thread as a reference: forum.ecoustics.com/.../14343.html
@steven:
The whining noise is definitely the colorwheel. Make sure you don't have something rubbing against it, or its not set in there too crooked, etc.

Hi smackus!
I have a 52" Samsung DLP, about 3 years old. About a month ago the picture would go almost entirely green. Someone told me to try unplugging it for a minute, so I tried that and it worked. Now however, the picture will occasionally flicker. Nothing major, but annoying enough that I'd like to try and fix it. If I unplug it it will go away for a few hours but then come back. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks!
smakus said on 3.30.2009 at 10:34 AM
@tony:
At a minimum you probably need a new bulb. You might need a ballast as well, but try a new bulb first. The bulb is easy to replace, and there are many tutorials online.
@jason:
it sounds like you need a new colorwheel

the power for the ballast runs from the power board located on the "power button" side of the unit.. it is the board up front. IF the bulb comes on at some point the ballast is doing its job. there are several small dongles of wires going from the dmd into the power board that actually control the power and what power gets to what board. I am having similar problems with a Samsung HLN4365w, mine has a new bulb. however when the unit is turned on it will power up as it should. a Flawless picture comes on screen as it always did BUT in only lasts 10-20 seconds and p00f the power being sent to the ballast/bulb is killed. im assuming that the dmd or digital board is sending a signal to the ower board to shut down power being sent to the ballast/lamp. My project is a gimme.. a tv that i really have all the time in the world to tinker with. I will continue to diagnose this issue and keep everyone updated with my progress. Im an electrician by trade so this is a lil out of my field of expertise, but i am indeed confident enough with small electronics that i will find the issue with time. or at least a "workaround" to it.. even if that means somehow supplying non monitored power to the ballast/bulb with the required voltage.
to be continued:::

Hello. I have a 43 inch Samsung DLP bought in 2004 or so. It was a great TV until it started to behave rather oddly. I turn it on and after a few minutes the picture turns black and white and pixilated. At first I thought it was the bulb, so I replaced it. I also replaced the colour wheel since it was making a lot of noise. At first the TV seemed to be fixed after replacing those parts, but then it started up again, only this time it got progressively worse. Now, when I unplug the TV for a while then plug it back in it works for a while, 15 to 20 minutes, but then I lose the picture. Unplugging and replugging the TV seems to be the only way I can get a picture, for at least a few minutes anyway. Does anyone have an idea what is going on? Research seems to be pointing toward either the ballast, or the DMD board. Anyone?

Hey i have a Samsung dlp hln567wx/xxa and when i turn it on the picture is fine for a few minutes then flickers for a bit and shuts off. It would run for about and hour or 2 and then shut off but now it is more frequent. Also you have to unplug it to be able to power it back up, but then it starts all over again. I did take it apart and clean all the fans and components with air and a small pc vac.
Any ideas here? Do these sets have logic boards or is that the DMD BOARD?

The TV is a Samsung 5063W manufactured 08/2004. Recently, the color wheel was replaced and, while waiting for a replacement DMD board with a jumper, the picture died an abrupt death during a violent movie. Leaping to the conclusion the bulb was dead, I took it to a TV repair shop and had 2 techs confirm it had expired after 3800 hours. They offered to sell me a new bulb for $160. I declined and ordered a new one for $127 including shipping. Alas! the replacement bulb failed to light. Using a volt meter on a DC setting, I inserted the red and black probes into the 2 prong plugs of the ballast board, turned on the TV and got no reading. None. No juice, moose! What further tests can I make to assure the ballast is dead or alive?

I have a 61 inch Samsung HLP6163W. I noticed the lamp does not turn on. I replaced the lamp but no luck. The tv turns itself on, I hear the fan and then I hear a vibrating noise ontop of that which is not coming from the fan. The noise isn't a whining noise (I know what that sounds like since this tv was repaired for that reason under warranty), just sounds like if the wheel is out of balance from its spindle or something. If the colorwheel is the problem, I am not sure why my new lamp won't turn on though. The tv would turn on for about 15-20 seconds, I guess the computer chip notices a fault and resets the power, waits a few seconds then turns on again. This cycle repeats for about a minute then the tv gives up and stops turning on and blinks the lamp and stnby lights. TV is out of warranty so this is a DIY job but I need to pinpoint the problem. Already wasted about 100 bux on a new lamp which I probably didnt need for another year and a half. Help!
lisa k said on 7.12.2009 at 2:05 PM
The Samsung DLP HL-T6156W has the three blinking lights which looks to be a bulb replacement. We replaced the bulb and nothing changed. There is no main power getting from power supply board to the lamp ballast board of the tv components. Do you think we need to replace the computer board? There is a bit of power that makes the fans go but that's it.
Thnaks!

Hey, thanks for the great blog post. I can give some advice here as well, as my TV has had some of the same issues. I have a 50" model, it's the HLR50WLR something. Doesn't really matter as all the DLP models have similar problems.
Turned on my TV to an extremely loud whining noise. Figured it was the color wheel, so I ordered and had it replaced. While taking it apart I also realized that the lamp had blown (glass was everywhere inside), so I ordered one of those as well.
Installed both the color wheel and lamp, but the lamp does not fire. I get the LAMP (green) light on the front, and then it eventually does the 3 lights of death.
Is this the ballast? I hope so, because I just ordered one. If this doesn't work then I'm sending these parts back and buying a new TV, because the next step is to buy a whole new light engine which is close to $1000.
The reason I think it's the ballast is because I hear a "click click click" noise which is indicative of the the lamp trying to fire, but not receiving enough power from the ballast. Or maybe it's the power supply itself, who knows!?!

I have a Samsung HLR5067WAX/XAA. Something made a loud pop, lost video but sound remained. Lamp had blown internally, no glass fragments though. Replaced lamp, but now the lamp will light as soon as you plug in the power cord...it will light if access door switch is active or not...switch makes no difference. I even unplugged the switch from the circuit board to see what would happen. After plugging in the power cord the lamp comes on and the "lamp" light on the front of the TV comes on for 30 seconds or more then goes off...pushing the power button on the remote at this time makes the "Timer" light come on but only while holding the button down...after a minute or two the lamp goes out as well...I never get a picture or sound on the tv...if I push the power button on the front of the TV during this sequence of events the "Standby/Temp light comes on. Something is able to turn the lamp off after a short time, but what can cause the lamp to come on by just plugging in the power cord. I hope I've given enough information to get a response. Thanks...

Best Buy/Geek Squad is a joke!! My Samsung DLP model HLR4667WX/XAA was just completly replaced end of May. Extended warranty thru Best Buy expired in July. TV has been flashing blue screen for couple weeks, finally had time to call about it. Geek squad refuses to guarantee work service or parts beyond 30 days or end of extended warranty. They can send service repair out for $150 COD for diagnostic, plus cost of repair...Basically they are saying the unit they replaced was only guaranteed 30 days, all because 4 year warranty has expired! I AM PISSED AND TOLD THEM I WILL NOT ONLY TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THIS BS, I will also be reporting it to Consumer Complaints agencys as well as my local news to call out the fraud Best Buy is selling. ANYWAYS, last time it was the color wheel, and when the tech came to see, he just ordered the whole entire unit, which he said was basically the whole insides of the tv, minus the shell. Basically what it is doing now, is after a little while, and intermittenyl, the screen will start flickering, or rolling , then go blue and then a message saying No Signal, which YES there is signal. the other thing is I think it IS the lamp. cause on the front of the TV is the power button, and it used to light up LAMP in green when you turned it on, and it dont do that anymore. WTF are all these questions posted for with NOOOOO answers? People - EVERYONE is having the same problems. I worked for a manufacturer (Toshiba) These things are designed to fail under the false premise that they used cheape parts only in the interest of making the product more profitable. Stop wasting your time. What ever money you try to save you will eventually spend in service parts or whatever. Even the prices are designed to make it not worthy. Just buy a new TV or all pull together a file a class action suit. No one has time or money for this. They know it. Why do you think you cant even get good help from the source (Samsung) Ive taken mine apart fully. I even found noise coils purposly routed on top of signal components. And you wonder why SVIDEO or Analog might have diagnal lines. They dont even ship these fully calibrated. Im lucky I got 20000 hours of my bulb and 7 years off my HLN5065W.

Hi everybody, sorry to have been absent! Wow, a lot of these DLP issues are out of my domain... But I can try to help:
If you hear a clicking noise, but no picture comes up, either your Lamp is dead, or your ballast is dead. Try replacing both if you've only replaced one (or none) recently.
If the colors are all messed up, it's either your color wheel, or one of the DLP logic/input boards. Color wheel is a cheap replacement, and anything else is probably not worth it.
These days you can really only find 3 parts: The lamp, the ballast, and the color wheel. Many of the problems here don't sound like they are related to those 3 parts.
You can TRY using this guide:
www.fixyourdlp.com/.../wizard-page-01.
Sorry I can't be more help, these TVs have so many problems that they are failing beyond my personal expertise, and beyond the parts that area available for these TVs.
I highly recommend moving to LED LCD or other technologies from here out...

Then sometimes it comes on as normal but only for a few seconds and turns itself off and on over and over. It appears this assembly is no longer available.Do you know if there is any other way to get this fixed without having to shell out $500? Thank you very much.

my samsung 61 dlp (hln617wx) will turn on, but soon the image goes black and the audio continues. sometimes you can turn it off and on and it returns.. to go out again. Sometimes you must unplug it to turn it off. I've seen similar posts, but no suggestions? anyone have a clue? I'm happy to "do it myself" if there is a fix. thanks in advance. bruce

I have a Samsung HLN5065WX/XAA
Symptoms: Picture blacks out but I have audio. Lamp is on in the back and I can't bring up the menu in any source (DVD/Cable/etc...). I have to turn off the TV and wait for the lamp to shutoff and then turn on the TV to get the picture back. This happens intermittently but frequently and sometimes it stays on for a while before it blacks out.
Any ideas??

Last 5 issues all sound like logic board stuff. You can't buy these parts anymore. :(
For $500, you might as well spend a bit more and get a brand new TV that will both look better and last longer. Sorry everybody.

I have a Samsung HLR5678W and after about 2 hours of viewing, the right 1/2 of the screen goes black. I can turn it off for awhile and then the set will act normal again but the problem reoccurs again after about two-three hours of viewing. Any suggestions and is this something I can repair myself?

I have a Samsung DLP 42666WX TV and have replaced the bulb about a year ago. Now I'm getting the TV just turning off without warning and now it wont come on at all. The three indicators say lamp, stanby, and timer. What is the problem here as I have no buzzing sound and the last time the lamp went out it just slowly made the picture darker but did not just turn off.

I have a Samsung DLP HLR5067wax/xaa. It turns off by its self and when I press the power button it does not respond. After repeatedly pressing the button or unplugging and replugging the tv it will finally turn. It will remain and show a great picture from anywhere from 10 minutes or up to 24 hours before shutting itself off again.
So, I had the light replaced a few days ago and when the repair guy left the tv was working and then it turned off and began its usual cycle of turning off.
It does not make any high pitch noises or buzzing sounds. at times there are green lines through the picture which usually resolves quickly.
what do you think would cause the tv to shut off and not turn back on? does that sound like a ballast? and is the ballast the same as a control panel? Or does that sound like a colorwheel?
I look forward to hearing your feedback

I just replaced the lamp on my HLT-5676S and I have these mushroom-shaped dots on the screen. It is like something is on a surface where the light projects. When the picture gets brighter the dots get smaller and dimmer, when the picture gets dark it is the opposite. Doesa nyone know if there is something that might need to be cleaned, or any info on this matter would help

I also have this POS with the same problems like everyone else. Replaced the lamp twice in less than two years, so almost $360 on top of the $1600 I paid for the TV. This by far, is the worse company to deal with, apparently the lamp is the fix-all answer to all their customers. I will never, ever buy anything that has samsung written on it and will do everything possible to prevent others from buying this brand. This should be a recall on a known defect that they kept producing and selling. I have notified the BBB in my state. Please, do not spend any more money, it will not fix the TV.

I have a Samsung 61" HLN617W DLP. Have had it for about 6 years now with absolutely no problems except having to change one bulb. The other day, I noticed TEMP light on front panel of TV was 100% "red" color. I looked in manual and web sites but could not get any information to identify the cause of this. I assumed it was due to the fact the my kids left the TV on for a straight 24 hours. I turned off the unit for 24 hours and when turning it back on the red light on panel still remained. I then unplugged the TV to reboot and when I turned on set again the Red Light was gone. My wife continued to watch TV the next day for several hours then she heard a "POP" noise and the entire TV went black. I turned off the TV and when turning the TV back on I heard a very loud humming noise that would oscilate in low ..high..low pitch noises.
Any ideas what I should change out... Color Wheel ?? Fans ??

I have a Toshiba DLP, and in the middle of watching a DVD, it started resetting itself. I Heard a click when it did this, and The LAMP LED light flashed 15 times and the tv attempted to restart itself a few times before picture and video returned again.
I replaced the lamp with an original toshiba lamp specific for my model, and the tv was on for 45 minutes until identical symptoms returned. The TV comes on with a beautiful, bright HD picture (brighter than the lamp I replaced) but this intermittent restarting game with the LAMP LED light flashing returns.
I've sucked out all the vents with a high powered Dyson vacuum, and that didnt seem to help with this problem either. ANy ideas?

I have a Samsung HLN617W1X/XAA. I was turning off the TV by hitting the ON/OFF button on the bottom right of the TV, and felt a very large shock. The TV turned off at that same instant. I couldn't tell if it was because of my hitting the button, or something shorted out. None the less, the TV will not turn back on. Any suggestions on what happened, and ultimately, how to fix it? I'm not the most technical person, but I have replaced the bulb for this TV twice without any incident. Thanks in advance!

I have Samsung HL 437W. It is just a tad darker than it used to be.
Replace lamp? Or wait until failure? And what does a color wheel do?

Ok my HL S5086W shuts off periodically and two lights begin blinking. It will do it all the time for a while and begin working fine. I would replace the bulb but I don't want to spend the money if it is something else. Everything I have read indicates that three lights blinking bulb replacement.
