A smart move for Sony...
It would be really nice if Sony offered to accept HD-DVD movies as trade-in for their Blu-ray counterparts, free of charge. That would drive the sale of Blu-ray players, and Sony could snatch up all of the screwed HD-DVD customers (who obviously have proven they are willing to spend money on a high definition format).
So not only would Sony have a potential new customer base for hardware sales, but they would also gain customers who have a proven history of spending money on high def movies.
Of course, Sony knows they don't HAVE to do this, but still... I think it would be a smart move if they want to get the train rolling quicker for Blu-ray, and potentially the PS3 as well.
What do you think?

Or at least a discount/trade in offer. It would sure make me likely to get one sooner.

Great concept! I hope Sony's smart enough to pick up on this idea. Sadly, though, I agree with Pete that if they do decide to do something like this, they're more likely to offer a discount rather than a straight-across trade. (Although from the customer's point of view, the latter would be much more reasonable, I don't expect Sony's accountants to be swayed by their perhaps more logical--in this case--marketing people.) :-\
